What is a tip calculator?

A tip calculator takes a bill amount and a tip percentage and tells you the gratuity, the total bill including the tip, and how much each person pays when you split the check. Instead of doing percentage math at the table, you type the bill and pick a tip percentage and read the answer right away. It's built for everyday situations — restaurants, bars, takeout and delivery, taxis and rideshares, and salons — and shows both the tip on its own and the all-in total per person.

How to calculate a tip

Working out a tip takes three quick steps, and this tool does them automatically as you type:

  1. Enter the bill amount in the first field — the pre-tip total.
  2. Set the tip as a percentage, or tap one of the quick-tip buttons (10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, 25%).
  3. Read the tip amount and the grand total. To split the check, enter the number of people and you'll see the tip and total each person owes.

What is the tip formula?

The tip formula is: tip = bill × (tip percent ÷ 100), and total = bill + tip. First turn the percentage into a decimal by dividing by 100, then multiply the bill by it to get the gratuity, and add that to the bill for the total. For example, a 20% tip on a $50 bill is $50 × 0.20 = $10, for a total of $60. To split it, divide the total by the number of people: $60 ÷ 3 = $20 each. This calculator runs that math for you instantly as you change any number.

How much should you tip?

In the United States, a typical sit-down restaurant tip is 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill, with 18% to 20% common for good service and 20% or more for excellent service. Counter service, takeout, and coffee shops often see smaller tips or none, while bartenders are commonly tipped about $1 to $2 per drink or 15% to 20% of the tab. Tipping customs vary widely by country, so these figures are a guide rather than a rule — adjust the percentage above to match your local norm and the service you received.

Splitting the bill and tipping on tax

To split a check evenly, this calculator divides the tip and the total by the number of people so everyone pays the same share. Whether to tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount is up to you: tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is slightly more common, but many people simply tip on the total shown on the receipt for convenience. If you want to tip on the pre-tax amount, enter the subtotal as the bill; if you'd rather tip on the full receipt, enter the post-tax total instead.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a tip?

Multiply the bill by the tip percentage divided by 100 to get the tip, then add it to the bill for the total. For example, a 15% tip on $40 is $40 × 0.15 = $6, for a total of $46. Enter the bill and pick a percentage above and the calculator does it instantly.

What is a 20% tip on $50?

A 20% tip on $50 is $10, making the total $60. If you split it between two people, each pays $5 in tip and $30 in total.

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

In the US, 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill is standard at sit-down restaurants, with 20% or more for excellent service. Customs differ by country, so use the percentage that matches your local norm.

How do I split a bill with a tip?

Calculate the total including the tip, then divide it by the number of people. Enter the number of people in the "Split between" field and the calculator shows the tip and total each person owes.

Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?

Either is acceptable. Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is slightly more common, but many people tip on the post-tax total for simplicity. Enter whichever amount you prefer as the bill and the calculator handles the rest.
