Compress images to reduce file size right in your browser.

ToolsSoup's Image Compressor is a free online tool that shrinks the file size of your photos and pictures right in your browser. Load a JPG, PNG, or WebP, choose how much to compress it, and download a smaller file in seconds — with no uploads, no watermarks, and no sign-up. Your images never leave your device.

What is an image compressor?

An image compressor reduces the file size of an image so it takes up less space and loads faster, without changing its width and height. It works by re-encoding the picture with lossy JPEG or WebP compression, which drops detail your eye is unlikely to notice in exchange for a much smaller file. People compress images to speed up websites, stay under email and upload limits, and save storage on their devices.

How to compress an image online

Compressing an image with ToolsSoup takes just a few seconds:

  1. Click Choose an image and select the photo you want to compress.
  2. Drag the Quality slider down to shrink the file more, or up to keep more detail.
  3. Pick an output format — JPEG for photos, or WebP for the smallest files — and click Compress image.
  4. Check the new file size and savings, then download your compressed image.

How does the quality slider work?

The quality slider controls how aggressively the image is compressed. Higher quality keeps more detail but produces a larger file; lower quality discards more data for a smaller file. For most photos a quality of 70–85% gives a large reduction in size with little visible difference. Lower the slider further when you need to hit a strict size limit, and compare the result against the original to find the sweet spot.

Frequently asked questions

Is this image compressor free?

Yes. Every tool on ToolsSoup is completely free to use, with no account, sign-up, watermarks, or hidden limits.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. All compression happens locally in your browser using the HTML canvas, so your images are never uploaded, stored, or seen by anyone but you.

Will compressing reduce the quality of my image?

Lossy compression always trades a little detail for a smaller file, but at moderate settings the difference is usually invisible. Use the quality slider to balance size against quality, and compare the result with the original before downloading.

Which format compresses images the most?

WebP usually produces smaller files than JPEG at the same visual quality, so choose WebP when the smallest size matters and your destination supports it. JPEG is the safest choice for maximum compatibility with older software and devices.

Why is the compressed file sometimes larger than the original?

If your original is already a highly optimized JPEG or WebP, re-encoding it at a high quality can add a little size back. Lower the quality slider, or pick WebP, to get a genuinely smaller file.
