EAN-13 Barcode Generator
Generate a scannable EAN-13 barcode from a product number. Enter 12 digits to compute the check digit automatically, or 13 digits to validate it, then download the barcode as PNG or SVG.
Enter 12 digits to auto-calculate the check digit, or a full 13-digit code to validate it.
The check digit was calculated and appended to your 12-digit input.
Generate a real, scannable EAN-13 barcode straight from a product number. Type the first 12 digits and the tool calculates and appends the correct check digit for you, or paste a full 13-digit code and it verifies the check digit is valid. The barcode renders instantly with the human-readable number printed underneath, exactly as it appears on retail packaging. Download it as a crisp vector SVG for print or a high-resolution PNG for the web. Everything runs in your browser, so your product numbers never leave your device.
What is an EAN-13 barcode?
EAN-13 (European Article Number) is the 13-digit barcode used on retail products worldwide. The first digits identify the country prefix and manufacturer, the next digits identify the specific product, and the final digit is a check digit calculated from the others to catch scanning errors. Although it began in Europe, EAN-13 is now a global standard managed by GS1 and is compatible with UPC-A scanners. You will see it on almost every packaged item in a supermarket.
How to generate an EAN-13 barcode
You can supply either 12 digits and let the tool finish the code, or a complete 13-digit number for validation. The barcode and the readable number update as soon as the input is valid.
- Enter the first 12 digits of your product number to have the check digit calculated automatically.
- Or paste a full 13-digit EAN-13 code to confirm its check digit is correct.
- Review the generated barcode and the human-readable digits printed beneath it.
- Download the barcode as an SVG for print or a PNG for online use.
How is the EAN-13 check digit calculated?
The check digit is the 13th digit and is derived from the first 12. Each digit is weighted by position: digits in the odd positions (1st, 3rd, 5th, and so on) are multiplied by 1, and digits in the even positions are multiplied by 3. Those products are added together, and the check digit is the smallest number that brings the total up to the next multiple of 10. For example, with 400638133393 the weighted sum gives a check digit of 1, producing the full code 4006381333931. This tool computes that for you and flags any 13-digit code whose last digit does not match.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to know the check digit?
No. Just enter the first 12 digits and the tool calculates the correct check digit and appends it for you. If you already have all 13 digits, paste them and the tool will confirm whether the check digit is valid.
What is the difference between EAN-13 and UPC-A?
UPC-A is a 12-digit code used mainly in the US and Canada, while EAN-13 is the 13-digit international standard. An EAN-13 code that starts with a leading zero encodes the same data as a UPC-A code, and modern retail scanners read both formats.
Will this barcode actually scan?
Yes. The barcode follows the EAN-13 specification, so any standard retail or smartphone barcode scanner can read it. For reliable scanning, print it large enough and keep a clear quiet zone of white space on each side.
Should I download SVG or PNG?
Choose SVG when you need to print or resize the barcode without losing sharpness, since it is a vector format. Choose PNG when you need a ready-to-use image for the web, a document, or a label template.
Are my product numbers sent to a server?
No. The barcode is generated entirely on your device in the browser, so the digits you enter are never uploaded to or stored on any server.
