What is a word frequency counter?
A word frequency counter reads a block of text and tells you how often each distinct word occurs. Instead of one big word count, you get a per-word breakdown: a list of every unique word paired with the number of times it appears, ranked so the most frequent words sit at the top. It is the fastest way to see which words you lean on, spot repetition, build a vocabulary or word list from a document, or get raw counts for writing analysis, language study, and research.
How to count word occurrences
Getting a word frequency list takes only a few seconds:
- Paste or type your text into the box above.
- Pick a sort order — by count, or alphabetically A to Z or Z to A.
- Set a minimum number of occurrences to hide one-off words, if you want.
- Turn on Case-sensitive to count Apple and apple separately, or leave it off to fold them together.
- Click Count words, then copy the ranked word-to-count list as CSV or tab-separated values.
Sorting, case folding, and filters
By default the list is ranked from most to least frequent so your top words show first, but you can flip to least-frequent or sort alphabetically to scan for a specific word. Case folding is on by default, so The, the, and THE are treated as the same word; turn on Case-sensitive when capitalization matters, such as counting proper nouns. The minimum-occurrences filter hides words below a threshold, which is handy for long documents where you only care about words that repeat. Keeping punctuation off strips trailing commas and periods so apple and apple, count together.
Word frequency counter vs. keyword density checker
These two tools answer different questions. The word frequency counter is the simple choice when you just want a ranked count of single words — how many times each word appears, with sorting, a minimum filter, and CSV or tab export. It does not calculate percentages or look at phrases. If you need density percentages, two- and three-word phrases, or a built-in stop-word filter for SEO, use ToolsSoup's Keyword Density Checker instead. Reach for the frequency counter for a clean word-to-count list and word analysis; reach for the density checker for SEO-style keyword and phrase density.
Why use this word frequency counter?
- Get a clean ranked list of every word and exactly how many times it appears.
- Sort by count (high or low) or alphabetically to scan the list your way.
- Set a minimum-occurrences filter to hide rare one-off words in long text.
- Choose case-sensitive or case-folded counting, and keep or strip punctuation.
- Copy the full word-to-count list as CSV or tab-separated values in one click.
- Runs entirely in your browser — your text is never uploaded or stored.
Frequently asked questions
What does a word frequency counter do?
It counts how many times each unique word appears in your text and shows the result as a ranked word-to-count list. It is the quickest way to find your most-used words and to see word counts at a glance.
How is this different from a keyword density checker?
The word frequency counter gives a simple ranked count of single words with sorting, a minimum filter, and CSV or tab export. The keyword density checker adds density percentages, two- and three-word phrases, and a stop-word filter for SEO. Use the frequency counter for a plain word-to-count list and the density checker for SEO-style analysis.
Does it count words case-sensitively?
By default no — Apple and apple are folded into the same word. Turn on Case-sensitive to count differently capitalized words separately, which is useful for proper nouns and code.
Can I hide words that only appear once?
Yes. Set the minimum-occurrences value to 2 or higher and the list will only show words that repeat at least that many times, which keeps long documents readable.
Can I export the word counts?
Yes. Click Copy CSV to copy the list as comma-separated values for a spreadsheet, or Copy tab-separated to paste it straight into another document or table.
Is my text private?
Absolutely. All counting happens locally in your browser using JavaScript, so the text you paste is never sent to or stored on any server.
